Denis Julien was a St. Louis based fur trader who began his career in the late 1700s working with Native Americans along the Upper Mississippi River.

When he was in his mid-50s, he came to Utah and Colorado, and for unknown reasons, he began c

arving his name, usually with a date, in the sandstone of the Colorado Plateau.
