Solomon Nunes Carvalho produced what were likely the first photographs of Colorado
as a member of John C. Fremont's 1853-1854 expedition across the West. Unfortunately, most of them were subsequently destroyed. Read about his near-fatal experience on that journey in my Daily Sentinel column linked below.
