The Castle Gate payroll robbery in Utah in April of 1897 gave Butch Cassidy nationwide notoriety as an elite outlaw.
Perhaps two much, since it also led to a concerted effort by authorities in three states to capture Cassidy. My column about Castle Gate is linked below.
