Homesteading in the 20th century

The Homestead Act was passed by Congress in 1862, and it played a key role in the settlement of the West in the 19th century.

This photo shows the first homestead approved under the 1862 law. It was in Nebraska.

But homesteading was still going strong in the 20th century, even in 1924, as this column of mine demonstrates.
